Story
In TimeSplitters, the most in-depth mode for the single player is the Story mode.
This mode goes through a number of different missions in many different environments.
The Story mode is also the only way to unlock a number of characters and certain Arcade Custom maps.

TimeSplitters[]

In the original TimeSplitters, the plot of each mission usually consists of nothing more than 'stopping the TimeSplitters'. Various 'heroes' must complete missions, which just consist of retrieving an object and taking it to the 'goal' (which is often located at the spawn point, depending on the mission and difficulty) in a set amount of time.

The levels are split into three equal groups, each containing a level set in the far past, near the present day (which was 2000 when the game was released) and in the future (notably, 2005 and 2020 are now in the past), within which, the levels may be completed in any order. These levels, when ordered chronologically, have systematic fifteen-year gaps between levels in similar time periods, and five-year gaps between these periods.

The three "future" levels in TimeSplitters 1 - Cyberden (2005), Planet-X (2020), and Spaceways (2035) - are much more futuristic than the levels' respective year settings imply, possibly due to the TimeSplitters' time-travelling antics (only to be erased/rewritten due to the events of the later games), or simply an alternate universe in the first game, compared to the sequels. However, this may be corrected by assuming that the levels take place in wrongly-listed years, and that they really take place in 2050, 2200, and 2305 (or 2350), respectively; either way, Chastity's Cyberden appearance still raises questions.

A simpler explanation would be that - as quite often happens in science fiction - a future time setting doesn't pan out as being realistic. It is also possible that the original game was 'non-canon', as it bears little relation to its sequels, and contains several plot and setting errors.

The locations of the spawn point, bag, and goal circle will change location depending on difficulty in Tomb, Village, Cyberden, and Planet-X.

TimeSplitters 2[]

In TimeSplitters 2, Sergeant Cortez and Corporal Hart are sent to the Space Station, which has been overrun by TimeSplitters during this period. In order to protect the Time Crystals, the TimeSplitters take nine crystals and hide them throughout time. Cortez and Hart manage to take hold of the Time Portal room and, during which, Cortez leaps through the portal and into other times and places in order to regain the crystals to take back to the Space Station. TimeSplitters 2 was also the game which introduced Main Objectives and Secondary Objectives, which appear in all missions.

The TimeSplitters' invasion has gotten worse, so the General decides that the only way to stop them once and for all is to go back in time and destroy the source of the Time Crystals. With help from Anya and others, Cortez uncovers the mystery of the TimeSplitters and chases the creator, Jacob Crow, through time in a quest to save humanity.

Trivia[]

  • TimeSplitters 1 is the only game with optional story protagonists.
  • For some reason, in all three games, characters only have three pain and death sounds at most in the story mode.
  • All three story modes feature Captain Ash and Harry Tipper; the Future Perfect Story is the only one not to feature Chastity.
  • TimeSplitters 1 is the only game in the series where every Story map can be played in Arcade. However, Tomb and Spaceways are edited to be smaller, like Aztec and Robot Factory in TS2.
  • Although Cortez is the protagonist of the main story, he wasn't in the first game. Similarly, Jacob Crow, the antagonist of the series and creator of the TimeSplitters, only appeared in the third game.
  • TimeSplitters 1 contains several plot and setting errors, especially with some of the protagonists:
    • Chastity Detroit appears even younger in 2019 than in 2005, hinting at alternate universes between TimeSplitters 1 and the sequels.
    • Mary-Beth Casey is a teenager during the mid-sixties, while her younger sister, Jo-Beth Casey, is roughly the same age in the mid-nineties.
    • Since the R-100 and the Gretel robots were only created during The Machine Wars era, the presence of R-108 and Gretel Mark I in 2035 hints at alternate universes between TimeSplitters 1 and the sequels. However, this may be explained by assuming that the duo time-travelled to 2035, or simply that Spaceways actually took place in 2305 or 2350.
