Gun Emplacements or 'Turrets' are stationary weapons found within the entire series. They are manually operated and are often extremely powerful and used for defensive purposes.

TimeSplitters[]

In the original TimeSplitters, turrets are of a slim build, and fire plasma rounds at high velocity out of a pair of long barrels. Like many other weapons in the series, this style of turret has two fire modes; the secondary mode fires rounds more accurately, but at a reduced rate of fire. It only appears in the Last Stand game mode in Planet X and Warzone (including the Challenge Space Vandals).

TimeSplitters 2[]

Gun turrets can be found in Story Mode, some Arcade Maps and Mapmaker Maps. Armed with a pair of linked heavy machine guns, they are deadly accurate in addition to a mounted missile pod on some variants; While the missiles don't track targets well, they're usually compensated with being refreshed every five minutes.

Gun Turrets in Story are occasionally used to fight bosses or waves of enemies for progression. Though they tend to have limited ammo and lack the missile module. With the exception of the ones found on the top of Oblask Dam.

Siberia Three shielded turrets can be found at the top of Oblask Dam and are usually used to fight the boss. They offer some degree of protection, due to their shields, but the Special Forces' continous spawning makes this a rather tricky fight. They're also equipped with Missiles. TS2 Dam Turret
Return to Planet X A trio of futuristic shielded turrets can be found on the first beach area, where the laser fence blocks Cortez from venturing deeper through the valley. They have limited ammo but can be used against the invading Meezor and their UFOs.

On Normal and Hard, the player will need to operate a bigger version, which acts as an Anti-Air Defence, against a fleeing swarm of UFOs. This one has no missiles but compensates for it with a battery of six plasma cannons that can fire in turn or simultaneously.

Arcade[]

Ice Station Two unshielded gun turrets protect both sides of the central building, covering the corner sponsons. They have extremely limited ammo and are exposed to return fire. It's also extremely easy to get flanked.

They work extremely well in team-based objective gamemodes, especially Capture the Bag

These guns are amply supplied.

Mapmaker Shielded Gun Emplacements can be added to Mapmakers levels, in the 'Objects' tab. These variants have max ammo for both guns and missiles.

Their use can vary for either Story or Arcade matches.

TimeSplitters Future Perfect[]

The turrets featured in this game have unlimited ammo, but can now overheat instead. They are relatively hard to aim due to their huge muzzle flashes, but the high recoil of their predecessors is gone.

Story[]

Time to Split - The gun emplacement, found in the area before HQ's entrance is a powerful, rapid-fire, plasma turret. Although firing slower than its 1924 counterpart, it's just as damaging and cannot overheat. Cortez uses this to protect his marine allies from an impending Berserker Splitter attack.

Scotland the Brave - A WWI era Vickers machine gun is used by the Urnsay troopers to stop Cortez and Captain Ash from ascending the trail from the beach, though (if not on Hard) a Navy bomber will kill the gunner shortly after, and the turret can be used against the enemy. A second one can be found mounted on the bed of the pickup truck, which can be used by either Cortez or Ash, depending on who is driving.

The Khallos Express - A turret of a modern design appears near the beginning of the level. It is inside a boxcar carrying explosive barrels, among other goods. If not killed quickly enough, one of the henchman will leap over the sandbag barricade and man the turret. Outside of that, it is completely useless to the player, since enemies will not attack in a position for you to use the turret. It functions identically to the turret in the previous level. What's interesting to note is that this turret sounds very similar to Splitter Crow's machine guns during the later level Future Perfect.

Arcade[]

Vietnam - The only gun emplacements that appear in Arcade Mode, with one on each side of the river. They both perform identically to the one found on Urnsay.

Challenge[]

The Urnsay stationary turret acts as the player's weapon when shooting down flying targets in the challenge.

MapMaker[]

Turrets can be placed in MapMaker levels to be used in Story and Arcade, though there are three types available:

Likewise, all three reflect the map's current tileset.

  • Egyptian Tileset: WWI era Vickers machine gun
  • Horror Tileset: Steampunk style wooden turrets with a pair of revolving brass cylinders.
  • Military Tileset: A modern military Browning M2 HMG, resembling the Khallos Express turret.
  • Lab Tileset: Sleek, white versions of the M2.
  • VR Tileset: Virtual, red, chunky turrets; Their size protects the majority of the gunner's hitbox.

All three types can have their turn radius changed, and the type of ammo can be changed by going into the properties menu.

Trivia[]

  • Every gun emplacement in the TimeSplitters series (excluding those in Vietnam and TSFP MapMaker) uses the same firing sound.
  • Using an emplacement for long enough in a TSFP Arcade match will allow a player to earn 'Gun Turret' as their favourite weapon.
  • Arcade bots cannot use the Gun Turrets in TSFP, although Story NPCs placed in MapMaker can use them when they spot the player.
  • The turrets in TSFP will cool down much quicker if completely overheated rather than only partly.
  • The turrets in TS2's machine guns resemble the Bren light machine gun.
